bad gateway

i got this error message in my browser...while shopping for shoes. "502: Bad Gateway."

"wow," i thought, "that's got to mean something." doesn't it?

from my current position of stasis, any gateway looks good. but a bad gateway? is there such a thing? och. i waste so much time looking for road signs of life that are just error messages.

You were just hit by the Footwear Denial Protocol. This was invented in 1998 and is covered by RFC 5642. The protocol specified that Internet routers should pseudorandomly interrupt Internet traffic engaging in the purchase of shoes. It doesn't happen all the time because researchers at the time were concerned about breaking the Internet but it does happen often enough to serve as a mild deterrent, a "cooling off" period if you will.

The need for the protocol is undergoing serious debate. Some want to broaden it significantly to cover Facebook, Twitted, web comics, political blogs, and Youtube commenters. Others, however, argue that Pandora's box has been opened and there's no limit to bad things that can happen on the net, so it should be eliminated entirely. Despite the protocol's narrow scope, I have definitely found it useful on the Sikorsky-Stewart home network and reckon it saves our household $12,000-$13,000 a year.
