rose sexist cottage

has anyone seen a commercial for this horrendous child's toy - called "Rose Petal Cottage" by Playskool?

it's disgusting - a little pastel-colored house, kid-sized. the commercial features a little girl and then someone narrating "a place that's all her own" and the camera shows her BAKING, doing LAUNDRY (there's a washer/dryer in this little girl's home) and ARRANGING FURNITURE.

it is unbelievable. boys get rockets for toys and girls get....little houses where they can cook for and clean up after others?! what YEAR is this?!?!?

two years....

believe it or not, it's almost exactly two years since i started this little blog. sometimes i still walk around san francisco and have to remind myself that i live here. i live here.

and life is great - great job, great apartment, stellar friends and the best boyfriend.

but, sometimes i think that most of san francisco is looking for a parking spot. they're hard to come by here, and i've wasted more gas than i care to admit, and definitely more frustration than i would like, for spot for my car.

but i'm also looking for a PARKING spot. i mean, a place to root my life. and most people here are either looking or have given up. because, it's really hard to park in san francisco. it's expensive. and most decide to pick up and move elsewhere rather than search endlessly for a place to park.

life happens in cycles. and people cycle in and out of the bay area. just before i arrived, several leaders in my field - arts education - picked up and left the bay to root their families someplace else - some place more affordable, less beautiful, colder; more of a compromise. more like home. buffalo, ny. pittsburgh, pa. portland, or.

so i'm postponing the park. and i might end up circling the block indefinitely. but it does get tiring living in a place where everyone is resigned to a temporary life.
