I don't believe it!

literally a day after i posted a picture of an ugly dress with an accompanying rant about ugly dresses (see below), i found THIS on perezhilton.com (a fabulous celebrity gossip blog).

i STILL don't like it. and i STILL don't like most dresses i see these days.

But i DID break down and buy the jcrew shirdress so i have at least one cute summer dress to wear in the coming months. Hope it fits!

Ew, ew, EW!

Is it me, or are ALL dresses this season really, really ugly? I honestly can't find one that I like. They all have one or more of the following characteristics:
1) no waist - babydoll style. Which is cute on Shirley Temple but makes anyone with a chest look mildly pregnant.
2) strapless - another nightmare for those of us who have curves. i don't want to spend all night unattractively hiking up my dress.
3) hideous patterns - i personally love color. i try to incorporate color into my wardrobe. what i do NOT try to do is wear something that causes vertigo. some of these patterns are just awful.
4) no color/bad color - again. i love color. but it seems like everything is a)grey b) eggplant, or c) some other unattractive color like mustard or olive green
5) no PETITES! an ongoing problem. dresses always cut me off strangely, and i am forced to tailor them.
6) synthetic fabric or jersey - it's impossible to find a dress in a quality fabric that is cut to flatter. which makes finding really nice, classy dresses a rarity.
7) pencil skirt - for those of us who are curvy or bottom heavy, this is a nightmare. i can only rarely find clothing that fits both my hips and my waist. I would love to find a skirt or dress that accentuates my waist and hides my hips. isn't this just common sense? does ANYONE want their hips front and center? didn't think so.

Four years ago, i found so many pretty dresses I didn't know what to do. I SHOULD have stocked up. Because now no matter where i look, i can't find a dress i like enough to buy. wedding season is coming up and, like it or not, i am unprepared!

walzwerk and why i haven't posted

i've figured it out. i haven't posted because a) i don't have a secure wifi connection at home and b) i don't have wifi in my bed (which is apparently where i used to do most of my blogging). since i'm out and about most of the day, i haven't had the time. hopefully, that will all change this summer when i move into SF from Berkeley (finally!). I'm hoping life will be a lot easier.

In the meantime, i HAVE to tell you about my new favorite restaurant. It's called Walzwerk, and bills itself as San Francisco's premiere East German Restaurant. Not just German. East German. The people who work there are German. The food is German. The beer is German. And it's all laid back and appropriately spare. Though with some great kitschy touches from the soviet era. It's a laidback place for a nice night out with good beer and brats...and only a couple of hipsters.

What's more, it's literally in the middle of nowhere. no shops, no other restaurants, no office buildings. It sits in the middle of some dingy townhouses on South Van Ness - right near the Freeway. Which I guess is pretty appropriate for a restaurant whose logo is a smokestack.

AND i got to practice my german (or the pieces that i remember from my class in geneva years ago - "IST HIER PLATZ BEZETST?" (hey - they didn't teach us how to SPELL in german).
